Discovering Your Characters

"Of course, I know my characters!" you say. But do you really?

Light-bulb: It's harder than you think to really know your character. Sometimes we writers can get so worked up over them that we just give up. Well, don't!

Try having an interview with them just like in this clip from one of my favorite movies:

Come up with a series of questions for your character and just (out loud) start a Q&A session. Also, I saw a great way to work on finding out your character's relationships. Check out this piece by @TheSpellcheckSurvivor: So Close To Finding Us | Light (writelight.org)

If by this point, you still haven't really got an idea what to ask your character(s), here's a starting list video: (1) How to Create a CHARACTER (The Best Character Profile) - YouTube

Keep in mind that to really discover your character, you must know the plot of your story/lie/misbelief, etc. as Abbie's really helpful video mentions.

So, work on getting to know your character and post either the Q&A session you had with them or a short story about a specific character from another character's perspective. Remember to have fun and happy lighting!

PS: you may get interrupted by your family in the process of interviewing, or they may just think you're crazy! 🤣
